Film crews have worked in Santa Clarita since the silent era, when Westerns were shot on ranches in the surrounding canyons. Melody Ranch in Newhall, once owned by Gene Autry, is still a working movie ranch. The hilltop home of silent star William S. Hart is now a public park and museum, and the city hosts a Cowboy Festival each spring.
